It's beautiful weather with the arts and the music and we're having a wonderful time," said John Wheeler, a math teacher at Warrington Middle School. "The emphasis is on relaxing."</div> </div> <p>Gallery Night also was a welcome diversion for some of the artists in attendance.</p><p>By day, Jan Kurtz is a research scientist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, but Friday night she sat in front of her paintings at the Blue Morning Gallery on Palafox Street. "It's a good balance for the day job," Kurtz said.</p><p>Kurtz said that Gallery Night can be counted on to bring in a crowd.</p><p>"We count that about 3,000 punch cups go away. That's our method of keeping track," Kurtz said.</p><p>She said there was some concern among her friends about the possibility of outdoor alcohol consumption being banned at the event, and they were relieved when organizers received a permit allowing it.</p><p>"I think they've realized that there was no harm done," Kurtz said.</p><p>Local architectural and engineering firms also got in on the action with "Canstruction."</p><p>The nationwide competition involves participants designing and building structures with nonperishable canned goods. It was hard work but I Pulled it off with the help of my friends and fellow artists. Many guests said it was the best show in a long time. This project was the most satisfying experience of my life.
