PNJ's shotty coverage of gallery night!

Thousands show for Gallery Night in downtown

Art galleries opened their doors and spilled onto the sidewalks in downtown Pensacola Friday for Gallery Night, a showcase of local artwork and music.

"It's been a long week. It's beautiful weather with the arts and the music and we're having a wonderful time," said John Wheeler, a math teacher at Warrington Middle School. "The emphasis is on relaxing."

Gallery Night also was a welcome diversion for some of the artists in attendance.

By day, Jan Kurtz is a research scientist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, but Friday night she sat in front of her paintings at the Blue Morning Gallery on Palafox Street. "It's a good balance for the day job," Kurtz said.

Kurtz said that Gallery Night can be counted on to bring in a crowd.

"We count that about 3,000 punch cups go away. That's our method of keeping track," Kurtz said.

She said there was some concern among her friends about the possibility of outdoor alcohol consumption being banned at the event, and they were relieved when organizers received a permit allowing it.

"I think they've realized that there was no harm done," Kurtz said.

Local architectural and engineering firms also got in on the action with "Canstruction."

The nationwide competition involves participants designing and building structures with nonperishable canned goods. After the structures are judged, the food is donated to Manna Food Pantry.

Eight local architectural and engineering firms participated in the contest, said Susan Bullock, president of the board at Manna.

"That's pretty good for a town like Pensacola," Bullock said.

I just cant believe this is the only article about gallery night in the PNJ. why even bother!

The Show was a HIT!

Last night was the big opening of my fist real curatorial project Cosmoplastic. It was hard work but I Pulled it off with the help of my friends and fellow artists. Many guests said it was the best show in a long time. This project was the most satisfying experience of my life. You will see me again!
PS pictures to come.

I want to thank everyone who helped me make this happen especially my artists and helpers.
